Black History Month - Posted January 31
Black History Month
On Sunday January 31, I accessed Wikipedia on the internet. I plugged in Black History Month and the following is what came up:
“Black History Month is a national annual observance for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in the month of October.”
“The remembrance originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as "Negro History Week". Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. Woodson also founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.”
The Lord laid it upon my heart to late last year to put together an evening to commemorate the contributions to our society by the black community and culture. On Saturday February 20 at 6 PM, we will be hosting a service at our church that will celebrate the great gift of diversity that God has given to us. We are mailing out 4,800 invitations to the City of Troy, which has a black population of about 5%. Additionally, we have invited several other churches from the surrounding area to help us expand our horizon.
There will be contemporary music, a relevant message, over $100 in groceries given away, other gifts, and refreshments afterwards. The night will be dedicated to tearing down the walls of racism and building bridges of unity among all races of people. Furthermore we have entitled the night “Everlasting Freedom” to acknowledge the gift of freedom from sin that Jesus Christ has given to each one of us. Juvaughn Baker will be the guest speaker for the evening, and we are extending an invitation to those in the St. Louis Metro area to join us.
